Douglas C. Munski, PhD | Professor | University of North Dakota

Since 1978, Douglas C. Munski, PhD has excelled as a professor in the Department of Geography at the University of North Dakota, where he has predominantly taught first- and second-year students across general education courses in both human and regional geography, the geography of North America, and anthropology studies. Upon reflection of his accomplished, decades-spanning career in education, he is especially proud of the fact that he is currently teaching the grandchildren of students he had in the late 1970s and early 1980s—as their grandparents, parents, and older siblings recommended they take courses with him.

Dr. Munski had a strong education-forward upbringing, where being in the field was an expectation in order to provide service to the community. He was always surrounded by good teachers who stressed to him the importance of geography, history, anthropology, sociology, political science, economics, and general social studies. In addition, upon graduating from high school, he had impactful faculty at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he ultimately earned a Bachelor of Science in education, a Master of Arts in geography, with a minor in urban planning, and a Doctor of Philosophy in geography—in 1974, 1975, and 1978, respectively. Degrees in hand, he launched his career as a graduate teaching assistant at the University of North Dakota—ultimately advancing to an associate professor and a full professor.

In addition to his primary endeavors as an educator, Dr. Munski served as chair of the Department of Geography at the institution from 1999 to 2001 and then from 2020 to 2023, and was a key player in its geographic education program and taught social studies at the UNC College of Education & Human Development. He has also been active as a commissioner in the Grand Forks Historic Preservation Commission and is involved as an elected board member of the Grand Forks County Historical Society and the Dakota Science Center, a 501 (c)(3) organization that promotes science education. Dedicated to his field, he maintains memberships with the American Association of Geographers, American Geographical Society, Canadian Association of Geographers, and National Council for Geographic Education.

Speaking to his students, Dr. Munski tells them he hopes they’re able to do more than survive in this life, but thrive.
