Dr. Munski is a professor in the department of geography at the University of North Dakota, where he has been a faculty member since 1978. An alumnus of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, he earned a Bachelor of Science in education and geography in 1974 and a Master of Arts in geography and urban planning the following year. In 1978, he was awarded his Doctor of Philosophy in geography and urban planning.
Though initially planning to pivot into urban and regional planning after completing his doctoral studies, Dr. Munski realized his passion for education while serving as a graduate teaching assistant. In 1978, he joined the faculty of the University of North Dakota’s department of geography, where he continues to teach with a focus on 100- and 200-level general education, human geography and regional geography courses. During his time with the school, Dr. Munski rose from assistant professor to associate professor before becoming a tenured full professor. He is a two-time former chair of the department of geography, having served from 1999 until 2001 and again between 2020 and 2023.
In recognition of Dr. Munski’s commitment to excellence in academia and to the students of the University of North Dakota, he has been the recipient of honors including a National Teaching Award, a National Academic Advising Award, and a 2021 Outstanding Course Development Award, among others. As an established voice in his specialty, Dr. Munski is a member at large of the Canadian Association of Geographers, a lifetime member of the National Council for Geographic Education, and affiliated with the American Association of Geographers and the American Geographical Society. He considers it an honor and an accomplishment to have taught multiple generations of pupils, especially the children and grandchildren of some of his earliest students.
Dr. Munski credits his success to his family’s emphasis on the value and potential of a comprehensive education, and to his teachers for celebrating social science disciplines. He is an avid supporter of nonprofit organizations including the Dakota Science Center and the Northern Lights Council of the Boy Scouts of America, and is both a member of the board of the Grand Forks County Historical Society and former commissioner of the Grand Forks Historic Preservation Commission.
